If you wish to become a truck driver, but are unsure of how to get into trucking, there are some things you should know about the process.
Before considering the steps to becoming a truck driver, know that there is an age requirement. To legally operate commercial motor vehicles, you must be at least 21 years old. However, you can obtain a learner’s permit as early as age 18, and some federally run pilot programs and military programs allow younger drivers to work.
Individual states are responsible for issuing CDL’s, not the federal government, but in most states students are required to attend and graduate from a legitimate truck driving school.
Becoming a truck driver can take a few weeks or a few months, and your training won’t just include the rules of the road. You’ll also learn about how to inspect your vehicle for safety, how to plan and manage long trips, and how to secure freight.
Steps to Becoming a Truck Driver
You will need to meet certain requirements in order to drive a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) and be hired by a professional company.
Step 1: Meet the requirements to become a professional truck driver.
- Be at least 18 years in order to drive in state lines, 21 years old to drive state to state
- A social security number
- Pass periodic drug tests and medical examination(s)
- Pass a background check
Step 2: Enroll in training and obtain your CDL.
- Find a truck driving school.
- Take advantage of company-paid CDL training options.
CDL requirements depends on the school you choose, as well as what type of commercial drivers license you want. Most programs take around three to seven weeks, but Class A programs are more thorough and usually take longer than other license programs because they require more in-depth training.
Step 3: Find a driving career that suits your lifestyle.
Prior to starting employment at most companies, you will be required to pass a drug and alcohol screen in addition to sharing your work history and passing a background check.
